Despite amassing a total of 52 points, Schalke narrowly fail to win their eighth German championship, finishing as runners-up.

1 July 1972

Thanks to a 5-0 win over Kaiserslautern, Schalke win the German Cup for the second time. The goalscorers in Hannover are Helmut Kremers (2), Klaus Scheer, Aki Lütkebohmert and Klaus Fischer. Team captain "Stan" Libuda holds the Cup aloft.

1972/1973

The Bundesliga match-fixing scandal - which for Schalke begins on 17 April 1971 with the game against Arminia Bielefeld (0-1) that is thrown in return for DM 2,300 per man - comes to a head when the details of the affair become known. Many current and former Schalke players (Klaus Fichtel, Klaus Fischer, Rolf Rüssmann, Jürgen Sobieray, Herbert Lütkebohmert, Reinhard Libuda, Hans-Jürgen Wittkamp and Heinz van Haaren) are banned by the German Football Association (DFB). The last offenders to be reprieved do not play again until January 1974.

9 June 1973

The final Bundesliga game at the Glückaufkampfbahn (2-0 against SV Hamburg) before the move to the Park Stadium, which is officially opened on 4th August with a match against Feyenoord Rotterdam.

11 June 1976

With 29 goals Klaus Fischer becomes the Bundesliga's leading scorer.

9 October 1976

Schalke record the highest win in their Bundesliga history, 7-0 away to Bayern Munich. In the Olympic Stadium Klaus Fischer (4), Manni Dubski, Rüdiger Abramczik and Erwin Kremers conjure up a goalfest.

21 May 1977

Schalke finish Championship runners-up behind Borussia Mönchengladbach.
