week 3 - match preview

Bochum never give an inch, says Rutten

The visit of VfL Bochum to the VELTINS Arena on Saturday (kick-off: 1530 CET) is the first of two derby matches for the Royal Blues. Though Schalke coach Fred Rutten warned against complacency, he is confident his side can take all three points.

Rutten was keen to point out that the Champions League exit has already been forgotten. "We analysed the game and discussed it with the players. But since Thursday afternoon it's no longer been a topic of discussion. We have lots of experienced players in the team who have put it behind them."

Indeed, the focus now is solely on the Bundesliga clash with Bochum. "It's an important game for us now", Rutten said. "As a professional you have to be able to cope with situations like these. The task now is to win the derby. Games against local rivals are always hotly contested by both players and fans."

General manager Andreas Müller takes the same view. "What's the point in thinking about what could have been? We have to concern ourselves with things we can influence. And our next challenge is VfL Bochum."

Rutten declined to say whether he will make any changes to the side that went out against Atletico on Wednesday. "I have a lot of thoughts going through my mind at the moment. You'll see what they are at half past three on Saturday. But I haven't made a final decision on the starting line-up yet", said Rutten.

The Schalke boss has prepared his players to face an awkward Bochum side who "never give an inch". Rutten saw this for himself against VfL Wolfsburg last Sunday. "Bochum were leading 2-0 and played very well, especially in the first half", he explained. "All in all they were a little unlucky to draw 2-2. So we should be warned - they are a good footballing side."
