Week 27 - Match preview

Magath looks to exploit fitness edge over HSV

"Another three points and we're as good as in the Europa League," said Felix Magath ahead of Sunday's trip to Hamburg SV (1530 CET). "I'm not willing or able to talk about anything more!" According to the Schalke boss, the signs are good.

The reverse fixture ended in an entertaining 3-3 draw. |Copyright: firo sportphoto|"HSV are having to cope with a very heavy workload this season," the 56-year-old said, adding that Bruno Labbadia's team have so far played a whopping 42 matches in the Bundesliga, the DFB Cup and the Europa League. "We're in a better situation in that respect. I feel we have the edge over them in fitness terms, and we have to exploit that."

What also stands out is the fact that Hamburg have conceded a lot of goals recently. Shot stopper Frank Rost was beaten four times in Leverkusen last week and again at RSC Anderlecht in the Europa League on Thursday. "Letting in four goals twice is a lot," the Schalke manager said. "But on the other hand HSV have scored plenty themselves. They're in great shape in attack. Not least thanks to the signing of Ruud van Nistelrooy in the winter break."

Magath feels his side will have to stifle Hamburg's attacking game as early as possible. "We're very stable at the back and are expecting them to come and attack us," said Magath, "because Hamburg are at home and need three points in the battle for a European place just as much as we do." But even if the Royal Blues do concede a goal or even two despite their best defensive efforts, they will not wilt, he stressed: "After the reverse fixture we know we're capable of coming back even if we go two goals down." The two sides drew 3-3 at the VELTINS Arena last October after 90 turbulent minutes.

Magath has almost a full squad to choose from for the trip north as there have been no further additions to the injury list. Heiko Westermann is the Schalke manager's only worry, having pulled out of Thursday morning's training session with a minor problem. "He has a tight calf," he explained, which is why the Schalke skipper is doing some individual training and a bit of gymnastics with fitness coach Werner Leuthard at the moment. Magath is sure he will be available for selection, however. "It's looking good," he said.
