You could be forgiven for thinking that Friday's visit of VfB Stuttgart to the VELTINS Arena (2030 CET) would be a special game for Marcelo Bordon. The Brazilian did play for the Swabians from 1999 to 2004, after all. On Wednesday, however, the 34-year-old played down the emotion of facing his former club.
"It's been a long time since I played for Stuttgart," the defender said. "So for me it's a game like any other." Nevertheless he has fond memories of his time there, having been very successful in a team of a similar young age to the current Schalke lineup. Bordon also rates the current Stuttgart side very highly. "It's going to be very difficult for us on Friday," he predicted, "because VfB are very quick going forward."
Yet Bordon does not fear his former employers. "We've prepared well and are playing at home," said the Brazilian, who is hoping Schalke can extend their unbeaten home run. The Royal Blues have not lost a game at the VELTINS Arena since the fixture against VfL Wolfsburg in September last year.
And Bordon feels the Royal Blues are well placed as they enter a season-defining run of games against their biggest rivals for a place in Europe. "We have got ourselves into a good position to finish at the top end of the table after 34 games," he said.
