Bordon out with broken hand

Besides the players who are away on international duty with their respective countries this week Schalke coach Fred Rutten was without a further three members of his squad at training on Monday.

Marcelo Bordon was unable to take part in the session after breaking the fourth metacarpal bone in his left hand against Werder Bremen on Saturday, and strikers Gerald Asamoah and Jefferson Farfan are also sidelined. "Gerald suffered a blow to his knee on Saturday so he sat out today as a precautionary measure", explained Rutten. Asamoah is likely to resume training on Tuesday, however.

Peru international Jefferson Farfan has flu and was therefore told to stay in bed. "He needs to recuperate. He hasn't got a temperature, though", said Rutten, who has been fighting a cold himself for the last few days. The Dutchman is putting up with his runny nose, however. He said: "As long as I don't give it to anyone else I can train."

As for Bordon, the Brazilian has had his arm put in plaster and four screws inserted in his hand.
