Schalke suffered a serious blow on day two of their training camp in Doha. Following a DFB disciplinary hearing Jermaine Jones has been banned from all competitions for a period of eight weeks up to 1 March 2012 for his foul on Marco Reus in the round of sixteen DFB Cup tie against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
"I don't want to play it down as it was violent conduct and it deserved a certain level of punishment. But there have been similar cases of violent conduct that have drawn a suspension in the competition they happened in," said general manager Horst Heldt in response to the verdict. He also pointed out that Reus was able to continue the game.
Though Jones is a repeat offender, the last time he was sent for an early bath after a red card was back in 2006. "On top of that, Jermaine has also apologised to Reus in person and has subsequently shown remorse and contrition," said Heldt. Schalke have now accepted the verdict, however.
