The Royal Blues are likely to be without Ralf Fährmann for quite some time after the 18-year-old reserve goalkeeper tore a tendon in his right thigh during training on Wednesday morning.
Fährmann will not undergo surgery, however, as according to club doctor Thorsten Rarreck the injury is to be treated conservatively. Yet Fährmann looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines: "While we don't hope so, it looks like the season is over for him", Dr Rarreck said.
"It's a bitter blow", said head coach Mirko Slomka on hearing the news. "Ralf has only been with us since the beginning of January. He's fitted in wonderfully well and made a tremendous impression in training."
Toni Tapalovic, 26, will now join the squad as the third-choice keeper and train alongside regular keeper Manuel Neuer and Dennis Lamczyk. Tapalovic has made two appearances for FC Schalke 04 II in the fourth-tier Oberliga this season.
