The IIHF World Championship in Germany kicks off with a mega event on 7 May 2010. For this is when the VELTINS Arena, the most state-of-the-art venue of its kind in Europe, will be transformed into a giant ice hockey stadium for a day to stage the opening game of the 2010 IIHF World Championship.
Tickets for this event went on sale today (30 January) Germany's opponents will include one of the world's top five teams, i.e. Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland or the Czech Republic.
The host nation's opening game at the tournament is set to draw a record attendance. As many as 76,000 spectators could watch the proceedings at the VELTINS Arena – that would be a new world best and a case for the Guinness Book of Records. Never before has an ice hockey game been attended by so many people.

The remaining games of the 2010 IIHF World Championship up to and including the final on 23 May 2010 will take place at the LANXESS Arena in Cologne and the SAP ARENA in Mannheim. Ticket sales for these games also begin on Friday.
