Jones promises further improvement

After the final whistle Jermaine Jones was pleased with the win over Karlsruhe, but he was also critical of himself and his team's performance. "We won, end of story. "That's what we wanted and that's what we got", he said.

As so often in recent weeks the defensive midfielder excelled as a goal provider. His 23rd minute cross found Kevin Kuranyi, who headed Schalke in front. "Taking the lead was important. But ultimately we should have scored a few more before Jeff killed the game off in the closing stages."

Jones was particularly critical of his side's failure to make the most of their opportunities on the break. "We often lacked the final ball", he said. "But let's not forget that you have to create these chances for yourself in the first place." The signs were therefore there.

Jones was reluctant to discuss what the next few weeks might bring for Schalke. "Our focus is now totally on the home game against Cottbus. When that's out of the way we can start thinking about our next opponents. We shouldn't be thinking about where we might be on the final day of the season. We have to take each game as it comes."

Nevertheless Jones feels the three points against Karlsruhe were very important for the rest of the season. He said: "Every win gives you confidence. And the more confident we are, the better we will play."
