Kevin Kuranyi is not afraid to admit that his appearance is important to him. But yesterday the Germany international was rewarded for putting his latest innovation second to Schalke's title hopes.
The 24-year-old striker covered his hair in gel before taking the field against Hertha BSC Berlin. This was solely down to the cut on his forehead that Kuranyi sustained scoring for Germany against Switzerland on Wednesday evening. "I wanted to ensure that the cut wasn't a factor every time I headed the ball and avoid the risk of it opening up again", he explained. And though the cut was a factor when he headed his side in front, "it didn't bother me at all at the time because I was so happy." The goal prompted Kuranyi to perform an elated dance on the pitch, with many of his team-mates wasting no time to join in.
For Kuranyi it was the latest instalment in a run of success that has already seen him score three and make three since the Bundesliga resumed after the mid-season break. "2007 has started well for all of us. And I'm feeling really fit now", he added. But after five games in the last fourteen days thanks to his international comeback Kuranyi was not too unhappy to have "a bit of a break" before the next game.
