Moravek joins Schalke

16.06.2009

Schalke have completed their first new signing for the 2009/10 season. Czech under-21 international Jan Moravek will wear the Royal Blue shirt for the next four years.

The 19-year-old midfielder arrives from Prague-based club Bohemians, who secured promotion back to the Czech first division last season, and has been handed a contract that will run until 30 June 2013.

"Over the next few years we'll be putting our faith in talented youngsters. Jan Moravek is one such player and we're delighted he's chosen to join Schalke", said club chairman Josef Schnusenberg. "The transfer came about partly thanks to our UEFA Cup hero Jiri Nemec, who recommended him to us."

Moravek is no stranger to Schalke, having trained with the Bundesliga squad during the winter break in January. During his one-week stay he also featured in the 6-1 friendly win over Dutch second division side TOP Oss.

Moravek had been with Bohemians, who won the league title in the then Czechoslovakia in 1983, since 1995. To date he has played for his country at under-18 level (6 appearances/2 goals), under-19 level (11/2) and under-21 level (2/0). Last season he helped Bohemians to the second division title by scoring eight goals in 24 outings.
