Neuer: "No matter who's watching – I always want to play well"

24.08.2009

Manuel Neuer kept another clean sheet away to Hoffenheim. To do so, the 23-year-old stopper had to be at his best on several occasions. In this interview with schalke04.de Neuer looks back to the match in Sinsheim and praises the men in front of him.

Manuel Neuer, are congratulations on winning a point in order or are you annoyed about losing two?
As always, we went into the game with the intention of winning it. But when I look back at the 90 minutes I have to be honest and say that Hoffenheim were the better team and in the end we have to be satisfied with the draw.

You pulled off several great saves to prevent your team from going a goal down and yet you always looked so relaxed…

Ultimately the reason I'm in goal is to play well and not concede any goals, if possible. That's my job. If I can help my team, then that's what I'm going to do. In my view we were solid in defence overall. Hoffenheim played very well up to the penalty box, but after that they hit a brick wall. Either our defenders cleared it or I made the save.

Germany boss Joachim Löw and goalkeeper coach Andreas Köpke were among the spectators at the Rhine-Neckar Arena. Did that put you under more pressure?
No, not at all. No matter's who's watching I always want to play well so as to put myself in contention for the national team.
