Özil contract will not be extended

Club officials met with Mesut Özil's advisor and father on Thursday to discuss the situation surrounding the under-21 Germany international. General manager Andreas Müller announced the club's decision later in the day.
"We have decided not to extend Mesut's contract, which is due to expire on 30 June 2009", the 45-year-old said. "This development is a consequence of the load few weeks and months. During this time we have repeatedly asked the other contracting party to make a clear commitment to Schalke 04. We have not been given any such commitment, which is why we have lost all trust. This is regrettable because we still feel Mesut is an outstanding talent. Nevertheless, our decision has been taken".
