Schalke and club foundation to support Haiti

20.01.2010

The Schalke foundation, Schalke hilft! (Schalke helps!) has decided to donate 100,000 euros with immediate effect to help the victims of the earthquake on the Caribbean island. In addition, the Schalke senior squad will visit Haiti to see the situation for themselves.

The Royal Blues will fly to the disaster area at the end of the season to play a friendly against the Haiti national team. "Terrible disasters such as this earthquake are often forgotten after a while", stressed head coach Felix Magath. "Despite the donations the victims then feel left alone. We want to show that we are with them and identify areas where we can perhaps give more help."

Presenter Thomas Gottschalk with Vitali Klitschko and Felix Magath at the charity gala.Magath took part in a television gala in support of Haiti on Tuesday evening, accepting donations from members of the public along with other celebrities. The Schalke boss told presenter Thomas Gottschalk of his special relationship with the earthquake region, as he visits his father on the neighbouring island of Puerto Rico every year. He said: "It goes without saying that I want to get involved long-term along with the club and club foundation."

The Royal Blues are calling upon all Schalke fans who wish to support the club's engagement in this time of extraordinary need to do so by making a donation to the not-for-profit foundation, Schalke hilft!:
