Show Racism the Red Card - this unambiguous statement coined by the fan project "dem ball is' egal" will make an impressive sight inside the stadiums of the top two German leagues over the next two weekends. And the Schalke players are now joining forces with Chelsea and UEFA to take the campaign into the Champions League.
The red card is being shown on an international stage for the first time, and it's no coincidence that a German and an English club are involved, as Show Racism the Red Card is a long-established phrase in the UK. Marcelo Bordon and Co. will thus present red cards in German, with John Terry and his team-mates holding up an English version.
As at all other Champions League matches this coming Tuesday and Wednesday, UEFA will be equipping the children who accompany the teams onto the pitch with T-shirts bearing the Unite Against Racism message. Both captains will also wear armbands with the corresponding logo. The match will be shown live and free to air on Sat.1.
The VELTINS Arena will certainly be an even more impressive sight a week on Saturday, when not only the players, coaches and match officials will hold up red cards against the racists, but also the 61,482 spectators in the stands.
