"Having parted company with Rafinha we had to find someone who can occupy this position straightaway."

The decision therefore came out in favour of the experienced Sarpei, who has made 181 Bundesliga and 34 international appearances to date. At the World Cup in South Africa he featured in all five of Ghana's matches. "I liked what I saw," said Magath. "Ghana were not only the most successful African team. Germany struggled against them as well and with his defensive performance Hans was a factor in that."

A further argument for signing Sarpei was his versatility, as he can play on the right or left of the back four. "He's at home in either position and our needs will decide where he plays. But he has a good chance of securing a regular place to allow him to help the team right away," explained Magath.
