Schalke sign Mineiro and take Lubos Hanzel on loan

Felix Magath had been expected to make an announcement with regard to new players this week, but he had a surprise in store after Thursday evening's training session when he unveiled not one, but two new signings.

The first addition to the Schalke squad is 24-times-capped Brazil international Mineiro. The 34-year-old midfielder was on Chelsea's books until recently and has been handed a contract that will run to 30 June 2010.

Mineiro, whose real name is Luciano Carlos da Silva, missed Thursday's session but only because he was completing the formalities to obtain a work permit. "We will use him in midfield this season. He has played for Brazil many times, and though he's a little older now he's definitely capable of leading a team", said Magath.

In addition, 22-year-old Lubos Hanzel of Slovak first division side Spartak Trnava will be a Schalke player until the winter break. "We then have the option of signing him for a further two-and-a-half years", added Magath. The Brazilian Flavio, who has also been on trial this week, will not be joining the club, however.
