Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Albert Streit is set to join Schalke during the mid-season break following talks held by general manager Andreas Müller and Eintract chairman Heribert Bruchhagen over the last few days.
"We have agreed that Albert will join us earlier than planned on 1 January 2008 - subject to a medical that will be conducted by our club doctor, Bernd Brexendorf, in Kiel this Friday", explained Müller.
The Royal Blues secured the attacking midfielder's services back on 12 November, when they agreed a four-year deal from the start of next season to 30 June 2012. And when Müller submitted an offer for the player to move during the winter break, Eintracht Frankfurt expressed a willingness to negotiate. The two parties have agreed not to release any details of the transfer.
Streit will be out of action for a while, however, having undergone surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee on Tuesday of last week (11 December). "Albert is already undergoing an intensive rehabilitation programme", said Müller. "We expect him to be match-fit again by the end of January."
Streit has made 94 Bundesliga appearances (11 goals) and 83 second division appearances (4 goals) for FC Cologne, VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt to date.
