Westermann: "We aren't a top side yet"

25.11.2009

This Saturday the Royal Blues travel to Borussia Mönchengladbach. In this interview with schalke04.de team captain Heiko Westermann looks ahead to the game and gives his views on whether Schalke are a top side.

Heiko Westermann, what are you expecting from the game at the BORUSSIA PARK?
Borussia will be in confident mood after doing well in their last three games against some good teams. But we've also played well in our last seven matches, so we've no need to fear them. We're in good form at the moment, especially away from home, though we can't be expected to win every away game, of course.

Should Schalke win again, people are bound to start asking whether you can top the table at Christmas. What's your view on this?
It's not something we talk about. We're taking each game as it comes and I think that's the way it should stay. Before the season I said I wouldn't see us as a top side until we'd been at the top end of the table for three-quarters of a year.

On Wednesday in training you played in midfield. Is Felix Magath planning on using you in that position?
That was a total coincidence. There were lots of defenders in my team so I just moved up into midfield.

Will you be around over New Year?
Yes, I'm staying here. Our first game after the winter break is on 16 January, so we may well train over New Year. We have lots of holidays in any case. In some leagues there aren't as many training-free periods, so we're happy to settle for a week.

Things are very tight at the top of the Bundesliga. Which teams do you rate the most?
Bayer Leverkusen are very successful at the moment, but in squad terms Bayern Munich are still the best team.
